The First Tiger Hat: A New Mother's Story

Child in a traditional embroidered tiger hat ensemble

A young mother opens a package. She takes out a tiger hat and unfolds it carefully. The tiger's face meets her eyes for the first time.

“Wow. It’s even more beautiful than I imagined.”

She holds her baby and gently places the hat on the child's head. Her movements are slow, a little nervous — afraid to wake or hurt the little one. The baby opens their eyes wide, yawns, and reaches up to grab the brim.

“I had one when I was little. My grandmother made it. She’s gone now, but I wanted my child to have one too. It’s like… as long as they wear it, she’s still here.”

She pauses.

“This hat, for me, is a kind of connection. Me and my childhood. Me and my grandmother. Me and this child. All of it is in this one hat.”

A mother holds her child, gently patting their back. Warm light comes through the window. The child yawns, their eyes slowly closing.
