Our Story

In China, there is a centuries-old tradition: when a newborn arrives, the elder women of the family hand-stitch a tiger hat for the child. In Eastern folk belief, the tiger is a symbol of courage, health, and protection. Mothers hold that a child wearing a tiger hat is watched over — softly and fiercely — so that even when a mother cannot be near, her little cub is never truly alone.

A true tiger hat demands an extraordinarily intricate process. From material preparation and pattern cutting to embroidering the tiger's face and sewing its ears, every step tests both skill and patience. Artisans work with time-honored, quality materials and follow traditional techniques passed down through generations. The hat body is cut with precision, its shape guided entirely by years of accumulated instinct. The tiger's brows, eyes, nose, and mouth are rendered by hand embroidery alone — capturing both the tiger's commanding spirit and the endearing charm of a child's accessory. With multiple classic embroidery techniques — satin stitch, seed stitch, and gold-thread embroidery — a single hat takes weeks to complete. Every piece is proof of its maker's hands.

Cub & Thread was born from this. We partner with artisans who carry this traditional craft, preserving its spirit of protection while reimagining it through a modern lens. The tiger's features are embroidered stitch by stitch, each face slightly different by nature of the human hand. We don't correct for these variations. We keep them as they are. Because they are evidence — from history and from family — that someone was here, pouring their heart into something made for a child.
